What’s So Special About You?

Do you remember growing up and having pickup games on the neighborhood sandlot? Do you remember ever being on a team only because you were the only one left at the end of choosing teams? It was an experience that left you feeling anything but special. Such is not the case with God. You are very special to Him. 1 Peter 2:9-10 “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people, that you should show forth the praises of Him Who has called you out of darkness into His marvellous light; who once were not a people, but are now the people of God…”. The phrase “chosen generation” means select, favorite offspring. With that in mind you could read the beginning of our text “But you are a select and favorite offspring”. Unlike the situation in the sandlot, God has not left you to chance, but He has personally selected you as one of His favorites to be a member of His team.

We see also that we are a “royal priesthood”. In the Old Testament one had to be born of a certain tribe to serve as a priest and to enter into the holy place. But under the New Testament all born again believers are priests with the privilege of coming into the holy dwelling place of God. And we are not just priests, we are royal priests. Royal denotes that we are a priesthood that not only has the privilege of entering into God’s holy presence, but also as one that functions in a ruling capacity, as kings. So, we are selected, favorite offspring of God with the distinct privilege of coming into His presence at will and also reigning victoriously in life as a king.

And notice the phrases “holy nation” and “peculiar people”. Holy means sacred, consecrated, or set apart. Nation means a unified group of people. So, born again believers are chosen by God to be a unified group of people set apart for His very own use. The word “peculiar is from a Greek word that means acquisition or purchased possession. Believers are God’s possession, chosen by Him and purchased with the blood of His Son, Jesus. You are God’s own special people, and He protects, preserves and blesses those who He selects into His family. So, the next time someone asks “What’s so special about you?”, answer them, “1 Peter 2:9-10”.
