Adopted Into God's Family

Romans 8:15 (AMP) "For the Spirit which you have now received is not a spirit of slavery to put you once more in bondage to fear, but you have received the Spirit of Adoption (the Spirit producing sonship) in the bliss of which we cry Abba, Father!"

What does this mean?  When we were born into this world, we were born in sin.  the Psalmist said in Psalm 51:5, "I was brought forth in a state of iniquity; my mother was sinful who conceived me, and I too am sinful".  Ephesians 2:3 says that we "were by nature the children of wrath...".

So, being born in sin, were not the children of God, but we were born by nature as children of the devil.  Jesus, speaking to the Jewish leaders in John 8:44 said, You are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father you will do...".  1 John 3:8 says that who willingly, knowingly and habitually commits sin is of the devil.  Verse 10 goes on to say that whoever does not conform to God's will in purpose, thought and action is not of God and neither is anyone who does not love his brother.

But thank God, when we were born again, we received the Spirit of Adoption.  The term ADOPTION means to place as a son; the changing from one family into another by legal means.  The adoption process changes our relationship with God and gives us a new position in His family, a position of sonship.  Adoption is a legal process that takes place either because of unfit parents or abandoned and orphaned children.

When we are born again, we are regenerated and made righteous.  2 Corinthians 5:21 "For He (God) hath made Him (Christ) to be sin for us, Who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him."  That is to say, we are approved and acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

Being born again changes us from the state of spiritual death to one of spiritual life.  1 John 5:12 "He that has the Son has life; and he that has not the Son has not life."  John 3:36 "He that believes on the Son has everlasting life; and he that believes not shall not see life."  John 5:24 says that who hears the Word and believes is passed from death unto life.

By the Spirit of Adoption we are given the legal position and privileges of the righteous, those in right standing with God.  By this adoption we are taken out of the devil's family, because he was an unfit parent, and placed into the family of God.  Colossians 1:13 "Who hath delivered (rescued) us from the power of darkness, and hath translated (transferred, exchanged) us into the kingdom of His dear Son."  In other words, God adopted us into His family out of the family of the devil.

Adoption makes another person's child our own.  The adopted child is fed, clothed, educated and cared for in every way a natural born child of the adoptive family is.  They are loved just as dearly as a natural born child and are legal heirs as well.  The adopted child enjoys all the same rights in his adoptive family as though he had been born into it.  And, through adoption, the child receives the name of the adopting parents.  Numbers 6:27 "And they shall put My name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them."  Deuteronomy 28:10 "And all the people of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of the Lord...:.  2 Chronicles 7:14 "If My people, which are called by My name...".

Adoption gives us relationship, position and privilege with God the Father.  It also gives us His name.

God only adopts into His family those who have been born again.  Up until the time we were born again, Ephesians 2:1 says were dead in trespasses and sins.  Dead people are never adopted; not in the natural, and not spiritually either.

But born again, we are made alive spiritually - 1 John 5:12 "He that has the Son has life..."

That is why Jesus said in John 3:7 "Marvel not that I said unto thee, you MUST be born again."  Because if you are not born again you can't be adopted.  John 1:12 says "But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name."

The results of this spiritual adoption include:

  • Deliverance from fear - 2 Timothy 1:7, Romans 8:15, Hebrews 2:15 (especially AMP)
  • Assurance of salvation and sonship - Romans 8:16,Galatians 4:6
  • Joint-heirship with Christ - Romans 8:17, Romans 8:32, Philippians 4:19
  • Deliverance from bondage of the law - Romans 8:2, Romans 6:14

You are an heir not an orphan!

You have receives the Spirit of Adoption.  You have been adopted by the work of the Holy Spirit into the family of God.  You have been "Made Right In His Sight", given Position in His kingdom, and called by His name.
